A University City
Improving the Human Condition
Three years ago, The University of Toledo Medical Center, The Blade and Buckeye CableSystem started a multimedia educational program called University Health Matters to educate the community on how to improve its health. This year, the program has evolved to become UT Matters.
With this new program, The University of Toledo will continue to bring the community health science education. But it will also introduce the latest news about how UT faculty, staff and students are transforming Toledo and how the community can be a part of it.
The UT impact
Lloyd A. Jacobs, MD, President of The University of Toledo, is a firm believer in the vital impact universities have on the community. Studies show that cities with universities have decreased risks for health conditions, such as type II diabetes. Universities are also known to be engines of economic growth, technology and culture.
Toledo and UT are no exceptions. “We are a university city,” says Dr. Jacobs. “We are home to the third–largest university operating budget in the state.” For decades, UT has dedicated itself to the well-being of Toledo and has worked to improve the human condition. Through UT Matters, the entire community will see that dedication and progress in action.
Bright future
As a research university, the advancements in technology are not only reaching the greater Toledo area, but the world. UT is nationally recognized for its research in alternative-energy resources. Its faculty has been recognized for leading some of the best research in solar cells. “We’re a cutting-edge institution,” says Dr. Jacobs. “We continue to help solve the energy problem, rather than add to the problem.” And as the demand to find a solution for gas and conserve energy increases, UT’s world-class faculty continues to challenge the minds of future leaders to find alternative energy resources.
Next-generation technology is just one initiative at UT that is improving the human condition. At UTMatters.com there will be something for everyone. Each month, topics will range from life-saving research and programs to academic excellence, athletics, arts and more. It will also be a place to find the latest events and programs at UT and to learn how you can play a part.
