Cardiovascular Screenings Help Save Lives
Early detection often leads to effective cardiovascular treatment, which is why screenings are so important. The University of Toledo is building the Heart and Vascular Center to help protect the hearts of you and your family. Here, patients can complete a health questionnaire and get their blood pressure, blood cholesterol, glucose levels and body mass index evaluated. They can also get other screenings, such as:
- 12-lead electrocardiogram – This test yields an accurate representation of the heart’s electrical activity from electrodes that are placed on the patient’s body.
- Stroke/carotid artery ultrasound – This test shows how the blood flows through the carotid arteries and reveals blockages or abnormalities.
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm ultrasound – This test examines internal organs and the surrounding blood vessels to detect blockages or abnormalities.
- Peripheral artery disease screening – An ankle-brachial index is similar to having blood pressure taken around your arm, but it is done around your leg. This test compares the blood pressure within the arms and legs. A duplex ultrasound measures real-time blood flow and detects blockages or abnormalities within the blood vessels.
To celebrate its opening, the UT Heart and Vascular Center will offer $50 screenings for a limited time. For details, please visit utmc.utoledo.edu.
