Healthy Staff Increases Bottom Line
Health-care costs can put a major dent in an individual’s wallet, as well as a corporation’s bottom line. One of the best money-saving steps individuals and businesses can take is to prevent illnesses and diseases through education and wellness programs.
“The University of Toledo’s Workplace Wellness Program provides companies with specific plans to help their employees create a lifestyle of healthy habits,” says Michelle Peterson, wellness coordinator at UT Medical Center. “Our individualized programs help inspire people to succeed, and it becomes contagious throughout the staff.”
Examples of programs offered include: health fairs, workshops, group classes and one-on-one coaching. The Workplace Wellness team is composed of health professionals who cover topics such as: ergonomics; health coaching; health fitness; exercise and weight management; nutritional education; smoking cessation; stress management; and women’s health. They can also perform blood pressure screenings, body fat analysis and cholesterol testing.
“In addition to reducing health-care costs, people within the company rally together toward a common goal of healthy living,” says Peterson. “And the impact of these programs can be quite impressive – increased work production, improved self-esteem and a happier, more energetic and motivated staff can result.”
Through the Workplace Wellness Program at UT, employers can show a greater level of dedication to their employees’ well-being while reducing insurance costs. “Education is the best preventive medicine,” says Peterson. “A healthier workforce benefits everyone, from management to employees.”
